By VoyageATL as seen here.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcia Smith.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Marcia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I created HGC Apparel to bring a sense of self-awareness, self-love, and confidence to the black community, which for me I learned and cultivated at Howard University. I wanted to bring that same energy, love, and appreciation for black culture outside the campus footprint to my brothers and sisters all around the world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Listen. Every day is a challenge but an opportunity. A chance to do better, improve, and learn. I feel blessed.

It’s honestly been a surprise to me the amount of love and support the brand has received amongst celebrities and fans around the world. The brand has a spirit and culture of its own which I am very blessed to witness — the love of the clothing and the genuine fans of the core message. I think given the challenges our community has faced in recent years, Hollywood was happy to have a brand with a message they could relate to and support.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about HGC Apparel – what should we know?
Marcia Smith founded HGC Apparel in 2011 with one goal in mind; to celebrate black culture and design a collection that had a social purpose. “After being in the military for eight years, I felt inspired to create a platform for my community. I had a vision and a voice and always wanted to design a unisex sportswear collection.” HGC Apparel is one of Instagram’s most engaging brands with over 350,000 followers. “I create content in an authentic voice and feel that people respect and love the brand even more because of how real we are,” says Marcia Smith, founder of HGC Apparel.

The HGC Apparel collection is bold, colorful, and purpose-driven in its messaging. “Black by Popular Demand, Black Love Made Me, and The Voice of The People” are just a few of the trademark slogans that are creatively woven through the collection.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My son inspires me and the community I serve as a creative. The customers love the brand so much that it drives me to keep designing. This past summer at Essence Fest, we sold out of the product and being on the ground, meeting and spending time with our people was magical.
