Marcia Smith founded HGC Apparel in 2011 with one goal in mind; to celebrate black culture and design a collection that had a social purpose. “After being in the military for 8 years, I felt inspired to create a platform for my community. I had a vision and a voice and always wanted to design a unisex sportswear collection.” HGC Apparel is one of Instagram’s most engaging brands with an engaged community of 360,000 followers. “I create content in an authentic voice and feel that people respect and love the brandeven more because of how real we are,” says Marcia Smith, founder of HGC Apparel. The HGC Apparel collection is bold, colorful, and purpose-driven in its messaging. “Black by Popular Demand, Respect, Protect, and Love the Black Woman” are just a few of the trademark slogans that are creatively woven through the collection which could not be more relevant given the Black Lives Matter movement and racial injustice in America. Celebrity fans of the brand include actress Zendaya, screenwriter and producer Lena Waithe, and musicians Chloe x Halle. The collection is sold online at www.hgcapparel.com and ranges in price from $39.99 for cropped t-shirtsoffered in an assortment of colorful cotton jersey fabrics, to $124.99 for a windbreaker set in neon, and $199.99 for a printed unisex bomber jacket. After graduating from Howard University, Marcia Smith established HGC Apparel in 2008. Our vision was to revive the early 90’s and to bring back the air of Black pride that most of us as youth associated with that time. The baggy sweatshirts, color blocking, and the bright and flashy “Black and Proud” designs were a staple of this time, which had been long forgotten until now. At HGC Apparel, we are inspired by this era and strive to put our customers back into this euphoric genre. It is our hope that HGC Apparel will give you a feeling of pride and consciousness of our community.
